Oh Rats!

In January of this year, we were contacted about a situation involving a number of rats, males and females all living together, that had been given over to one of our supporters.  The rescue agreed to step in and help out. We took in 13 rats, 8 males and 5 females. Of course, since the rats had been housed together, we assumed most of the females would be pregnant. We were right!

On January 24th, the first litter was born to mommy Ruby, 10 baby rats! On January 27th, Diamond gave birth to 3 little babies, and the next day, Emerald gave birth to 15! Another rat, Sapphire, also gave birth, but unfortunately her babies were stillborn 🙁

All of these baby rats are going to need foster and/or adoptive homes very soon! Rats are social animals, gaining much enjoyment and stimulation from each other’s company. We recommend keeping rats in pairs or groups (same sex of course). Rats living in groups can have fun chasing each other around, grooming each other, sleeping in a heap, playing tug-of-war with food, wrestling, communicating, and forming friendships!

These babies are not ready to leave their mothers yet, but the 8 male rats are also looking for loving homes. Sterling, Slate, Quartz, Peridot, Topaz, Opal, Jasper and Onyx are all available for adoption. View their profiles here.

If you are interested in fostering or adopting, please complete the online foster care application or adoption application.
